Three Valley Gap Overhead Bridge

This project for Hanna Infrastructure and PDI had several unique challenges that our team was able to overcome.

The first challenge was the requirement of two 18 M (59') free spans. One over the Eagle River, the other over the railway. To accomplish this feat our team utilized the Skytruss systems, invented by our friends at Skyline Scaffold.

The second challenge was navigating the railway. The location had minimal tolerance to fit the Skytruss in between the CPR safety window and the bottom of the bridge stringers, a mere 30mm. This challenge was overcome using the team's expertise and precision measuring tools.

The final challenge was the installation timeline. There was no availability to slow or stop the trains, meaning our team had to abide by a precise schedule and communicate effectively with the railway. In order to get the equipment installed within the train schedule, we developed an outrigger system to crane the truss into place and got it properly secured, all within 60 min.

2023 Memorial Cup

DW Builders out of Kamloops approached us with an interesting challenge towards the end of 2022; a custom structure for the 2023 Memorial Cup. Our objective was to build a raised platform that could hold over 150 hockey fans, beer gardens and the TSN elevated commentary booth, but would also not interrupt the flow of the arena down below. Together, we developed a plan that would do just this using Layhers lattice girders over all the stairways and concession areas, a 2.57M wide hallway lined with Layhers Protect System underneath and a lot of planning. Two accesses were necessary and had to conform to public access code. Each access point had its unique challenges, one came down behind the TSN booth which meant that we had to build with precision to ensure clear walkways and structural integrity. The other however, had to intersect an existing stair landing suspended over the main walkway around the arena. We managed to figure out an answer suspending a stair system from Lattice girders mounted about 18 feet above the floor. Ultimately, the event was a huge success and a unique application of our scaffold and access system.

Eagle River Man Bridge

The Eagle River Man Bridge was not a large project, but demonstrates a fantastic alternative use of scaffolding. This company was pouring concrete to increase the size of the pier footing around one of the Trans Canada Highways bridge rehabilitation projects. The issue presented was, on one side of the pier was the railway, and on the other was the Eagle River. CPR was going to charge thousands each day to have a monitor on site so the company could cross the tracks to do their work. NorthStar was able to come up with an alternative solution, a bridge across the river. The bridge was approximately 40 ft free span and had almost zero deflection. This solution saved the contractor a ton of money compared to the alternative of using a CPR monitor.

Big White Access Ramp

This project required a ton of crane time getting material and debris on and off the roof for roof and siding repair. As an alternative we built them a bridge from the adjacent bank, which although was eight storeys on the downhill side (requiring a very large crane) was close to level on the uphill side. This saved the customer thousands in craning time while providing consistent and safe access to the roof of the building.

Sandman Centre Loge Viewing Area

Gallery

DW Builders approached us looking for a better solution to access the ceiling of the Sandman Centre. They needed to install wood soffit for the aesthetic of the lounge they were building. The existing proposal they had was to come all the way from the ground, removing a ton of seating and taking up a bunch of space. We instead proposed a system where we wedged a scaffold between the second and third floor, then cantilevered out over the bleachers below and built up from there to reach the point in need of access.
